You will be asked to sign an informed consent for your surgery, at your doctor's office or at the hospital before your surgery. Read it carefully, it lists your name, the kind of surgery you will have, the risks of your surgery, and acknowledges that you have talked to your doctor about the surgery and asked any questions you may have. It also acknowledges your agreement to have the surgery.
Pre-operative evaluation, teaching and testing is necessary before your operation. You will receive a phone call from the St. Mary Mercy Hospital Pre-Anesthesia testing department prior to your procedure. Based on your medical history and procedure, a determination will be made whether or not a pre-anesthesia visit is required, or if a phone-screen interview by a Registered Nurse will be completed. Please be ready to provide a complete list of your medications and dosages. Please also include any over-the-counter medicines, vitamins or supplements.
If you were instructed by your surgeon to obtain a medical evaluation from your primary care physician or cardiologist, please make an appointment as soon as possible. The medical evaluation should be faxed to the Pre-Anesthesia Testing department at 734-655-2942 along with copies of EKG, stress test and/or lab results. This evaluation is an important step to ensuring your readiness for your surgical procedure and if not obtained, it may delay or cause cancellation of your surgery.
If your surgeon ordered pre-surgical testing, including labs, x-ray, EKG, stress test, please do so as soon as possible.
A hospital representative will contact you to pre-register you for your surgery. They will then contact your insurance company to verify benefits and identify any co-pay or deductible you may have to pay.
If you have questions, please call Pre-Anesthesia Testing Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 734-655-2109 or afterhours at 734-655-2000. For the automated information line, please call 734-655-2887.
